Performance Suspension Control Arms
Your vehicle uses its suspension system to get into gear and for it to drive smoothly and effortlessly on the road. Unfortunately, various components of the suspension system may break down over time or be compromised, such as your car suspension control arms. This can be due to an accident or minor collision....
Whether it is the lower control arm or the entire control arm that needs to be replaced, the suspension system needs to be repaired in order for the vehicle to be safe to drive on the road. That means every part of the suspension system needs to be functioning properly! If you’re noticing performance issues with your suspension system, a faulty car suspension control arm could be at fault. But how do you know if it needs replacing?
What are Control Arms and How Do They Work?
Control arms are the bridge between the car’s suspension and the vehicle’s frame, controlling the wheel’s movement so that they stay in alignment with the body of your car. Basically, they move up and down – especially when hitting a bump – to keep the bottom of the tire on the ground.
On average, cars will usually have between two and four control arms, and many of the modern ones only have them in the front suspension. Cars can also have upper and lower control arms, but again, most only come with lower ones because of the way strut assembly is designed.
Signs of Damage + Tips for Repair
After about 90-100,000 miles, you’ll start to notice your suspension control arms wearing down. This damage is exacerbated if you frequently run over large potholes or speed bumps. If your tires are also not wearing evenly, it might be the control arms’ doing.
You’ll also notice steering wheel vibrations, which increase as you accelerate before they even out. The steering wheel will “wander” too, meaning the alignment has shifted so that the steering pulls in either direction. This is especially annoying for the driver because they constantly have to correct their steering.
Finally, you’ll probably notice some clunking noises. This is a result of bushings and ball joints knocking together during takeoff, and it worsens as the car suspension control arm wears down.
